Berlin bathtub races to roll during town’s 2nd Friday Art Stroll

(July 8, 2011) For 20 years, local businesses have been turning ordinary bathtubs into rolling works of art and during Berlin’s 2nd Friday Art Stroll on July 8, the Berlin Chamber of Commerce will once again host this popular event.

The friendly, yet competitive race is open to anyone who wants to compete. Businesses, old and new, are strongly encouraged to participate — it is an excellent way to advertise while simultaneously having fun.

Starting at 5 p.m., bathtubs will be lined up and on display at the chamber’s new Welcome Center at 14 S. Main St. Enter for a chance to share the winning tub’s prize by voting on a favorite. Beginning at 6 p.m., the tubs will parade along Main Street to race central on Pitts Street. The official race begins at 6:15 p.m.

The Atlantic Hotel was the first winner of the Bathtub Races in 1991. John Barrett of Barrett Chevrolet won the bragging rights in 1992 and Barrett Chevrolet will be back this year to attempt to regain the title. Last year’s winner, Bathtub Fitters, will be giving it their all to defend its title. Newcomber Bryan Bushmiller of Burley Oak Brewery, is excited for the chance to win this year’s bragging rights. Jesse Turner, Berlin Shoe Box, will be retiring from racing and a halftime presentation will be made to honor him as the all-time leader, winning the most races to date.

Berlin 2nd Friday Arts Strolls are from 5-8 p.m. each month, with galleries and shops open late, showcasing works of local artists and artisans along with music in the streets.

Register your business today. Registration costs $50. Rules and registration information is available at www.berlin chamber.org or by calling the Berlin Chamber of Commerce at 410-641-4775.
