Tax-free Shop Maryland week scheduled Aug. 8-14
Select apparel, footwear exempt from tax
(Aug. 6, 2010) Back-toschool shopping just got cheaper in Maryland, with the announcement of the state’s tax-free Shop Maryland week.
Comptroller Peter Franchot, Patrick Donoho, president of the Maryland Retailers Association, and local elected officials held a press conference Aug. 2, at the Ocean City Factory Outlets in West Ocean City to announce next week’s taxfree shopping period.
Shop Maryland Week will run from Aug. 8-14. During that time, qualifying apparel and footwear items priced at $100 or less are exempt from the state’s 6 percent sales tax.
Qualifying purchases include items such as sweaters, shirts, slacks, jeans, dresses, robes, underwear, belts, shoes and boots priced at $100 or less. Accessories, including jewelry, watches, watchbands, handbags, handkerchiefs, umbrellas, scarves, ties, headbands, belt buckles and backpacks, will still be taxable.
