So many winter events going on, it’s hard to schedule a vacation
Even after some ‘fly south,’ activities abound in resort

(Jan. 29, 2010) Neither rain nor snow, cold weather nor frostbite, keep local retirees home at night. Good times abound around our town, all winter long. Contrary to popular belief, after the snowbirds migrate south, albeit a fundraiser or a day or night, social event attendance figures soar. In fact, if you hop aboard the town’s social merry-go-round, you’ll find yourself in need of a mini vacation. Trying to schedule your trip around winter events is bodaciously, humongously impossible. The snowbirds hate being regaled with tales of all the good times they missed. St. Andrew Center’s church-sponsored January luncheon bingo and the absolutely delicious chicken dinner were sellouts. Thanks to folks the likes of Fred and Sue Frankowski, John and Helen Sobkowiak, Pat Wosk, Joan DeMarco, Dan Nicholson, Rita Salerno, Frank Tumminello, Pat Luckett, Nick and Jane Bartolomeo, Peggy O’Malley and the Rev. Smith for keeping the good times rolling around our town all year round.

Kitchen liberation is a heartwarming experience for the members of my WAMS (Women Against Mornings and Stoves) club. Stay out of the heat of the kitchen? No problem in Ocean City. The Lord helps those who help themselves. All are welcome to attend these three awesome February events at St. Andrew’s Center. Tickets to local events make for great birthday, anniversary or just to say “I love you” gifts.
Even tho your favorite team is not in the playoffs, you might wanna check out the 2nd annual Tailgate Party on Feb. 5, 4-7 p.m. Tickets, $10, must be purchased by Monday, Feb. 1. Call 410-250-0300 for more info. We’re talking a DJ, food, fun, football and liquid refreshments. Surprise the football aficionados in the family with an early gift of love. Socializing with folks of like mind helps keep one in the loop. Around our town, ya’ just never know when you’ll find a lifelong friend just around the bend.

The Valentine’s Day weekend is not just for lovers. It’s a three-day holiday weekend, folks. What an opportune time to spread the word and show love for your friends, relatives or someone in need. On Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 6-9 p.m., St. Lukes parish is holding a Valentine’s Day dinner and dance. An Italian dinner with Caesar salad, garlic bread, penne pasta, meatballs and sausage, dessert, soda and coffee will be served. Beer and wine available. Ed Holson and his fabulous ’50s band will provide the live vibes for your listening and dancing pleasure.
Spread the word about this wonderful opportunity for a friendly get-together for friends and family. Ringside tables still available. Tickets, $20, for sale at the parish office, 410-250-0300.
New in town and wanna’ be found? I highly recommend that you attend the Delmarva Polish American Club’s 10th annual Paczki Dance on Saturday, Feb. 20, 6-10 p.m., at St. Andrew’s Center with music by “Joy.” Kielbasa sandwiches, paczki, beer, setups, snacks and good times, all inclusive. Everyone is welcome. Tickets, $20, call Helen Sobkowiak at 410-723-2639.
Be forewarned. Boogie-ing with the best is a given at all town events. Don’t say I din’t warn ya. The Polish and their offspring can really, really cut rugs when it comes to the polka. Best you practice, the competition is fierce. Calories left behind on the dance floor will be towed away for free, no questions asked. Trust me folks, no one will be the wider … oops … I meant to say, wiser.
Placing of a birthday greeting near or reasonably close to the right date or at all takes finesse. I ain’t got any. Who knows, maybe you or yours greeting will appear when you least expect it.
