Purple Heart recipients sought

(Oct. 23, 2009) A Veterans Day ceremony will be held Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Worcester County Veterans Memorial, off Route 589 in Ocean Pines. The sixth annual tribute will begin at 11 a.m.

This year's program will honor the area's "Wounded Warriors." Organizers are looking for those who have been awarded a Purple Heart. Anyone who has received a Purple Heart or who knows of someone who has received the military decoration should call Fred Wise at 410-289-8181.

Recognition will also be given to the late Ron Haslam, former member of the memorial's board of directors who organized many Veterans Day events at the memorial. A special wreath laying ceremony to honor Purple Heart recipients and an unveiling of a dedicated bench honoring "Wounded Warriors" will take place as well.

Wayne Cannon of WGMD, "the Talk of Delmarva," will serve as master of ceremonies and the featured keynote speaker will be Jack Rine Jr., past commandant of the First State Detachment, Marine Corps League. Patriotic music will be performed by the Delmarva Chorus and by Joel Todd on the bagpipes.

For more information, call Sharyn O'Hare at 410-603-4777 or Marlene Ott 410-430-5743.
