(July 31, 2009) Sitting on a metal bench near the swings at Berlin's Henry Park late Tuesday afternoon, Worcester County State's Attorney Joel Todd was deterring drug sales by his very presence. The Maryland Association of Community Services recently presented an MACS 2009 Excellence in Direct Support award to Roy Suggs and a Certificate of Recognition to Harriett Fisher, staff members of Worcester County Developmental Center, Inc. Suggs has been with WCDC for more than a year working as a job coach in the Supported Employment department. Fisher has been with WCDC for 15 years, primarily serving as a residential coordinator. Commercial zoning recommended for Gillis property on Rt. 589
(July 31, 2009) Although county planning staff opposes commercial development on Route 589 just north of Route 90, the Worcester County Planning Commission said last week that the land should be zoned commercial. The property, owned by Salisbury developer Palmer Gillis, is zoned for neighborhood business, a designation that will not be in the new zoning article. Full Story
Berlin annexes former Tyson poultry property
(July 31, 2009) Part of the former Tyson property will become a part of the town of Berlin, following the Berlin Town Council's vote Monday to annex it. On the property is the former Tyson cafeteria and processing plant. Although properties adjacent to it are in town limits, Tyson had not wanted the property to be annexed to be in the town. Michael James, managing partner of the Carousel Hotel in Ocean City, at right in back row, kicked off his campaign for the 2010 election to the Maryland General Assembly with an event Sunday at the hotel, where about 250 people gathered in his honor. Berlin woman killed in crash as she attempts to cross on Rt. 50
(July 31, 2009) An elderly Berlin woman was killed Monday when her car was hit by a minivan on Route 50 near West Ocean City. According to the Maryland State Police, 78-year-old Mary Rogers Cavey was on a side street west of Jerry Mack Road, on the south side of Route 50. Full Story
Resort earns five-star rating in national beach water survey
(July 31, 2009) The waters off the coast of Ocean City received a five-star rating for quality in a report released Wednesday by the Natural Resources Defense Council. The superior designation was included in the council's 19th annual beach water quality report, which found that many other of the country's 200 most visited beaches did not fare as well. Full Story

LIVING SHORELINE AT MACKY'S
Roman Jesien, science coordinator for the Maryland Coastal Bays Program, stands next to a new informative panel describing the living shoreline at Macky's Bayside Bar and Grill in Ocean City. The living shoreline is designed to protect the shoreline and stop migrating sand threatening a valuable tidal pool that houses terrapin, horseshoe crabs, terns and other wildlife. The project was designed by Spencer Rowe, Inc of Ocean City, with Joe Kincaid, Maryland Department of Environment. Planting began in April 2006. The sign was funded by Macky's owner, Macky Stansell, and is an example of how businesses can enhance natural habitat for the betterment of both. Full Story
Final two suspects arrested in June robbery of hotel
(July 31, 2009) Ocean City police have made two more arrests in connection with a June armed robbery at a resort hotel. Another man was arrested in Pennsylvania days after the June 11 robbery occurred. Police said the three men wearing white cloth masks with holes cut out for the eyes and mouth and brandishing handguns entered the Americana Hotel at 513 Atlantic Ave. Full Story

C-SPAN BUS VISITS OCEAN CITY
Ocean City Realtor Karla Morgan, left, joins Tamara Robinson and Doug Hemmig, community relations representatives for C-SPAN, on the C-SPAN Civics Bus which was parked at the convention center on 40th Street Tuesday. The 45- foot mobile production studio and demonstration center is traveling to schools and community venues to share C-SPAN's education and civic resources with people across the country.
