Robert Miller Robert Miller The Worcester County Sheriff's Office is searching for a Berlin man who fled from police on July 22 and who is wanted on federal charges.

Robert Lee Miller Jr., 37, is wanted by United States Marshals Service for violating probation on weapons charges. He also has an outstanding warrant from the Maryland State Police for failing to appear on traffic charges.

An arrest warrant was also issued by the Sheriff's Office for Miller in connection with a Logtown Road burglary. Miller was located in the woods near the Worcester-Wicomico county line and while he was being interviewed by a deputy he allegedly fled back into the woods.

While searching for Miller, a deputy was treated for a heat-related illness and later rejoined the search. Members of the Sheriff's Office, the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, the Maryland State Police and the Maryland Natural Resource Police were involved in the search.

Police described Miller as five-feet seveninches tall, weighing 170 pounds with brown hair. He was last seen wearing blue or gray colored shorts, a white T-shirt and a dark brown long sleeved button-down shirt.

Miller should be considered dangerous and possibly armed, police said, and if seen he should not be approached. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office at 410-632-1111, the Maryland State Police at 410-641-3101 or Crime Solvers at 410-548-1776.

Pedestrian struck

A 22-year-old Berlin man was hit by a car on Route 113 July 22 and is in critical condition.

The Berlin Police Department reported that the car, driven by a 68-year-old Berlin man, was traveling south on Route 113 when Timothy Bowen Jr. walked in front of the vehicle at the intersection with Bay Street.

Bowen was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury then transferred to the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Police said no charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.

Drug arrest

The Maryland State Police arrested two Pennsylvania men July 23 after drugs were found in their car.

Andrew J. Metzieger, 24, and Joshua A. McSorley, 23, both of Lancaster, Pa., were charged with possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

Police saw the pair's car parked in the parking lot of Mattress Discounters around 5 a.m., when the store was not open. One of the men was in the car, and police found the other walking over from an adjacent parking lot.

According to the police report, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from the car. A police search of the car turned up three smoking devices with suspected marijuana residue and a small plastic bag of suspected marijuana.

Vehicle fire

The Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a vehicle fire that occurred July 26 in Ocean Pines.

The fire occurred at 3:55 a.m. in the driveway of 16 Willow Way. There was heavy fire coming from the vehicle, according to reports, and firefighters from the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Company spent approximately one hour at the scene.

Nobody was injured in the fire, and the cause remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Matt Owens at 410-632-5666.

Fire in Pocomoke

No injuries were reported in a fire that damaged a Pocomoke home July 26, the Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office reported.

The fire began around 4:15 a.m. at 505 Morris St. The fire was quickly extinguished by the Pocomoke Volunteer Fire Company, with the aid of the Stockton and New Church fire companies.

The home was vacant at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Matt Owens at 410-632-5666.

Lightning causes fire

A lightning strike caused a fire in a Berlin home July 26, according to the Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office.

The fire at 619 Williams St. was reported around 8 p.m. Firefighters with the Berlin Volunteer Fire Company extinguished the fire with the assistance of the Showell and Ocean Pines fire companies.

The home was occupied at the time of the fire, and officials said everyone got out of the home unharmed.

DUI

A 23-year-old man was arrested by the Worcester County Sheriff's Office July 29 for allegedly driving drunk.

Zachary Hanley of Parkton, Md., was charged with driving under the influence.

According to the police report, a deputy saw Hanley's vehicle weaving between lanes and crossing the center lane on the Route 50 bridge. Hanley performed poorly on field sobriety tests, according to police, and was arrested.

Accident

Two people were taken to the hospital following a July 29 accident in Snow Hill, the Worcester County Sheriff's Office reported.

Around 9:30 a.m. a Chevrolet Camaro traveling north on Route 12 went to cross Route 113 and pulled into the path of a van traveling south on Route 113.

The van struck the car, and police said the drivers of both vehicles were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The police report did not specify the hospital or information about the drivers.

Knife assault

Ocean City police arrested a Baltimore man July 24 after he allegedly tried to rob people at knifepoint.

William Alfred Allewalt, 22, was charged with 14 total counts of first- and seconddegree assault, reckless endangerment, armed robbery and use of a deadly weapon with the intent to injure.

According to the police investigation, Allewalt had been drinking and began arguing with friends. During the argument, he allegedly used a knife to assault four people.

Allewalt allegedly put the knife under one man's chin and told him to empty his pockets before his friends could pull him away, police said.

Police received Allewalt's description and a mounted officer located him fleeing the scene, according to the police report. He allegedly tried to throw away the knife but it was recovered by police.

Allewalt was held at the Worcester County Jail on a $250,000 bond.

Gun found

Ocean City police found a handgun in a vehicle July 23 after stopping the car because the occupants were not wearing seatbelts.

Cory Robert Beaver, 19, of Gettysburg, Pa., was charged with possession of a handgun, possessing a handgun in a vehicle and a minor in possession of a handgun.

Officers on a seatbelt enforcement detail on Philadelphia Avenue at Eighth Street stopped a car driven by Beaver because he and his passenger were not wearing seatbelts, according to the police report.

The officers asked Beaver if they could search the car. After he consented, they found a .25 caliber handgun and ammunition in the glove compartment.

Beaver was released after posting a $25,000 bond.
