Helmets may be required for scooter users
(July 24, 2009) Ocean City is about to do what the state legislature would not: require people riding scooters to wear helmets. On Monday, the City Council passed an ordinance on a first reading requiring helmets for scooter drivers and passengers. The ordinance only applies to rental scooters and also requires riders to wear some type of footwear. Full Story

WE CAUGHT A WHOPPER
When Paul Fischer told us he caught a 44-inch rockfish off the inlet jetty two weeks ago, we believed him. Shame on us for buying into that fishy story. He caught it, apparently, but an anonymous tipster told us the picture we published had been hanging in the Pirate's Den on 33rd Street for more than two years (it now hangs upside down, above). We checked it out and it's true. Caught in a fish tale, Fischer apologized. "It started out to be a joke. It was not my intention [to make the newspaper look foolish]," he told Ocean City Today. Survey shows county students happy with public school system
(July 24, 2009) It can sometimes be hard to know what teenagers are thinking, especially when it comes to school, so the Worcester County school system decided to take a direct approach and just ask. (July 24, 2009) The county's approval Tuesday to order five police vehicles from a Delaware company left one county commissioner seething and another quite concerned. Plane crashes onto highway near Pocomoke, pilot unhurt
Eighty-year-old lands his experimental ultralight airplane on Route 113
(July 24, 2009) A Pocomoke man walked away unscathed after he was forced to make an emergency landing with his small airplane onto Route 113 on Sunday. Pilot Preston Norman Smith was the only person in the plane. The 80-year-old Smith was flying a CGS Hawk ultralight experimental plane he has owned for around five years. Full Story
Berlin drug trafficker convicted in Texas

Performers may use amplification in wake of complaint
(July 24, 2009) Ocean City government has backed down on its ban on the use of amplifiers by Boardwalk performers after receiving a complaint from the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU sent a letter to the Ocean City Council last week taking issue with the decision to begin enforcing the amplification ban. Full Story
