Smoking causes fire

Ian Ellis-Jones Ian Ellis-Jones Careless smoking caused a fire that ignited a bed in an Ocean Pines home July 15, according to the Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office.

The fire at 232 Ocean Parkway began at 7:49 p.m. A mattress and box spring in a bedroom caught fire and the occupant pulled the burning bed out into the driveway, the Fire Marshal's Office reported.

No injuries were reported. Firefighters from the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Company spent approximately one hour at the scene.

Drug possession

The Maryland State Police arrested two woman July 11 after they were seen using drugs in their vehicle.

Amanda Leigh Shockley, 21, of Willards and Brandy Nicole Hunsucker, 26, of Salisbury, were charged with possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

An off-duty sheriff's deputy contacted the state police and said the women were allegedly smoking marijuana while driving east on Route 50. State troopers stopped the car and found a pipe with suspected marijuana residue inside.

Michael Dwyer Michael Dwyer Burglary

Three teens were arrested for breaking into an Ocean Pines home July 11, the Ocean Pines Police Department reported.

A 13-year-old and a 14-year-old from Ocean Pines and a 14-year-old from Berlin were charged with third-degree burglary and theft over $500.

Police said the teens broke into a home and took cash, electronic devices and knives. The items were valued at more than $1,000. Approximately $400 in cash and stolen items were recovered.

DUI, accident

A Bishopville teen was arrested by the Maryland State Police July 21 on drunken driving charges.

The 17-year-old was charged with driving under the influence.

At 3:30 a.m., police located the teen on the ramp from Route 589 to eastbound Route 90. The teen reportedly told the officer his tire blew out, causing him to hit the guardrail on the ramp.

The officer detected the odor of alcohol on the teen and conducted field sobriety tests. The teen was arrested and later released to his mother.

Assault arrests

Ocean City police made two arrests July 16 in related assault incidents.

G. Wilson G. Wilson Jeffrey Allen Lyles Jr., 23, of Salisbury, was charged with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct. Darian Lamar Waters, 21, of Snow Hill, was charged with second-degree assault and failing to obey the lawful order of police.

An officer on bike patrol reportedly saw Lyles assault another man on Jamestown Road around 2 a.m. A crowd gathered while Lyles was being arrested and more police officers came to control the group.

Waters was arrested after he allegedly assaulted one of the police officers at the scene. Boating accident

Two people were injured July 17 when personal watercraft they were riding hit an duck blind in the Sinepuxent Bay, according to the Maryland Natural Resources Police. Police responded to the accident south the Eagle's Nest campground in West Ocean City at 10:20 a.m.

According to the police report, Abigail Linsenbigler of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Danielle Sloan of North Braddock, Pa., both 23, were riding on a personal watercraft in the bay when the operator, Linsenbigler, failed to slow down when approaching the duck blind and hit the structure.

Vehicle vandalism

Two men were arrested July 20 after they allegedly damaged four parked vehicles, the Ocean City Police Department reported.

Kyle Scott Hartzell of Ocean City and Bruce James Richardson of Wildwood, Mich., both 23, were charged with two counts of malicious destruction of property under $500 and one count of malicious destruction of property scheme.

A citizen alerted police that the pair was allegedly damaging parked cars on 13th Street at 2:45 a.m. The caller gave police description of the men and they were located a short distance away. Amusement park theft

Ocean City police arrested four men from New York in connection with thefts from the Pier Amusements July 14.

Ian Malachy Ellis Jones of Albany, N.Y., Michael Thomas Dwyer of Hudson, N.Y., Gregory Arthur Wilson of Red Hook, N.Y. and Peter William Marvin of Red Hook, N.Y., all 18, were charged with multiple counts of burglary and theft.

Employees of the Pier Amusements contacted police around 10:30 p.m. regarding a theft. Based on the descriptions of the suspects from the employees, police located the four men only a block away and various stolen items were reportedly found in their possession including T-shirts, stuffed animals and more.

Police said one of the suspects had also committed another burglary the night before.

Ellis-Jones was released after posting a $7,500 bond. Dwyer and Marvin were released after posting $10,000 bonds and Wilson was released on his own recognizance.
