State police test fixed tag reader in Worcester Co.
(July 17, 2009) Visitors making their way to Ocean City for the Fourth of July weekend were likely unaware their cars were caught on camera shortly before reaching the resort. Unbeknownst to motorists and, apparently, some local law enforcement officials, the Maryland State Police was testing a new type of traffic camera in Worcester County during the first week of July. Group continues county controversy regarding layoffs
(July 10, 2009) An ad in the June 26 issue of The Dispatch got at least one thing wrong, County Commissioner Bobby Cowger said this week: he does not work for Ocean City developer George Purnell. The ad, which took county government to task for laying off several planning department employees, charged that the commissioners were opening the county to development. Full Story
Record crowds turns out for annual canoe races
(July 17, 2009) BJ's on the Water owners Billy and Madlyn Carder celebrated the 30th anniversary of their 75th Street restaurant with a record turnout for their annual canoe races. Eighty-six teams of four competed in the canoe races around the island behind the restaurant. Full Story
Worcester Roads Division changes hours for summer
(July 17, 2009) Effective immediately, the Roads Division of Worcester County Public Works will begin operating on a four-day, 10-hour per day workweek. The new hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Offices to be closed on Fridays. Full Story

Revision to town's personnel manual will affect smokers
(July 17, 2009) A group of smokers on the sidewalk in front of Berlin Town Hall used to be a familiar sight. No more. Berlin Town Hall, its parking lot and sidewalk will soon be no-smoking zones. Municipal employees will no longer be permitted to smoke while at work even if in the course of their work, they are off-site. Full Story
Berlin hospital to provide free health screenings Aug. 1
(July 17, 2009) Atlantic General Hospital has teamed with the Pavilions owner in Ocean Pines to offer free health screenings, information, education and activities for children and adults . This is the 12th utility box painted in the downtown area by the Art League and the 17th utility box painted under the Ocean City Development Corporation's Public Art Program. Suicidal woman jumps from Rt.50 bridge
(July 17, 2009) A homeless woman who police said tried unsuccessfully to commit suicide by jumping off the Route 50 bridge was taken to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. According to the Maryland State Police, a 48-year-old woman jumped off the Route 50 bridge last Wednesday around 9 p.m. in a suicide attempt. Police did not release the woman's name. Full Story
Teens arrested for making homemade bombs in OC condo
(July 17, 2009) Two teens were arrested in Ocean City last Thursday for making homemade explosive devices and setting them off outside their unit. Resort police were called to the area of 717 Rusty Anchor Road, after it was reported that people were throwing explosive milk cartons. Full Story
Woman awaiting trial found dead at Worcester Jail
(July 17, 2009) A 26-year-old woman was found dead in her cell at the Worcester County Jail last Thursday but police do not suspect foul play. Katrina Lyn Schaeffer of Ocean City was found unconscious and unresponsive by jail guards that evening, according to a police report. She was taken to Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, where she was pronounced dead. Full Story
Phillips gets life plus 20 for murder, armed robbery
Girlfriend, wife ask court to show leniency but judge says he had his chances
(July 17, 2009) Charles "Charlie" Phillips' wife and his girlfriend asked a judge Monday for leniency in his sentence for murdering a Pocomoke plumber in March 2008. His eight children would miss him, they said. Michelle Phillips said her husband was "a really good guy," and not the violent, cold-hearted killer portrayed by the prosecution during the April trial. Helmets could soon be required of drivers, passengers of scooters
Though not yet a state law, council wants to make it official within town limits
(July 17, 2009) Ocean City officials are hoping to do what has yet to be done at the state level: require the drivers and passengers of scooters to wear helmets. Drivers and passengers of scooters over the age of 16 are not required to wear helmets in Maryland and several bills seeking to change that failed in Annapolis this spring. Full Story

Tourism Director Debbie Travers presented a draft proposal request to be sent to qualified ad agencies to the City Council on Tuesday. Council to hire inspector on contract despite hiring freeze
(July 17, 2009) Trying to save money and keep in line with the citywide hiring freeze, the Ocean City Council decided to fill a new vacancy in the Planning Department with a contract worker instead of a full-time employee. DELMARVA DOCKDOGS
Dogs flew through the air last Saturday during the first Delmarva DockDogs GlenRiddle Open, presented by Centex. The high-flying competition took place at the GlenRiddle marina off Route 50 in Berlin. The inaugural event featured dogs of all sizes and breeds launching from the dock and into a pool in an effort to out-distance their competitors — and, of course, snag the bait thrown by their trainer.
