County 'resource day' to aid homeless

(July 17, 2009) The Local Management Board Homeless Committee has organized Homeless Resource Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 22 at the Worcester County Health Department in Snow Hill.

The health department, Department of Social Services, Diakonia, Samaritan Ministries and other local and state government and private organizations have collaborated to make resources available at this event to aid those experiencing a housing crisis.

"This initiative is a collaborative event," said Claudia Nagle, executive director of Diakonia and spokesperson for HRD. "Its success in reaching those in need is dependent upon the coordinated efforts of many across our community."

Representatives from various agencies, including the Lower Shore One- Stop Job Market and Wellmobile, will help those who attend complete applications for assistance in the following categories: medical/prescription/insurance, food/housing, Social Services/public assistance, mental health/substance abuse services, veterans' assistance, legal assistance and other miscellaneous aid. Assistance in obtaining identification will also be available.

Free transportation to and from the health department in Snow Hill will be provided.

From West Ocean City, transportation provided by Dave's Taxi Service will leave the Park and Ride lot on Route 50 at 9 a.m. Free Shore Transit bus tickets are available at Diakonia, Samaritan Shelter, WACS Center, Sand Castles in Ocean City and Connections offices in Berlin.
