Birth announcement
Kylee Bunting Thornton and John Thornton IV announced the birth of John Benjamin Thornton V on Saturday, June 20.
The new addition, at 6 pounds, 13 ounces, and 19 1/2 inches, made his debut at 6:37 p.m. at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Maternal grandparents are Lynda and Keith Bunting of Berlin and paternal grandparents are Sharon and Bruce Long of Salisbury.
Maternal great-grandmother is Louise Atwood of Yardville, N.J. and paternal great-grandmother is Verna Sharpley of Snow Hill.
Student registration
Ocean City Elementary School will conduct new student registration and summer transfers on the following days during the summer: Wednesday, July 15; Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 3-4; Wednesday, Aug. 12; and Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 17-18. Office hours are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Maryland law requires the following: birth certificate, social security card, immunizations and proof of residency in the Ocean City district (utility bill, lease or tax bill).
Presents analysis
Arnold Jenkins of Berlin recently presented "A Financial Analysis of Microsoft Corporation" at the eighth annual Salisbury University Student Research Conference.
Jenkins concluded that although Microsoft's reputation and strong financial position remain a strong deterrent for its competitors, Microsoft will face increasing competition from opensource technology.
Jenkins graduated from Stephen Decatur High School in 2006 and is a junior majoring in management.
Garden clinics
The University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Service is offering free "Ask a Master Gardener" clinics each Tuesday, from 1-4 p.m., at the Ocean Pines library. The plant clinic will be available until the end of September.
Each week, master gardeners will be available to help with gardening questions, such as selections for planting, weed control, plant and pest identification and the environmentally correct use of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers for this area.
Visitors may bring a sample to the clinic, although it must be placed in a plastic bag with the owner's name and phone number.
Pines lotto
Tickets are available for the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department's annual cash lotto drawing and a chance to win $100,000.
Tickets cost $100 each, and only 1,600 are available so the odds of winning are greater.
The drawing will be held Sept. 7.
Tickets are available by mail — send a check with name, address and phone number to "OPVFD Cash Lotto," 911 Ocean Parkway, Ocean Pines, Md. 21811 — or at the South Fire Station.
Dean's List
n Maddison Kathleen Poloney of Ocean City, a senior at Gettysburg College, has been placed on the dean's honor list for outstanding academic achievement in the spring 2009.
n Ryan F. Wilde, a junior at Wake Forest University, has been named to the university's dean's list for the 2009 spring semester. Wilde is the son of Ross and Cindi Wilde of Ocean City.
Graduation announced
n Ocean City resident Lindsay Britt was one of 650 students to graduate from Messiah College on May 16 during the College's 100th annual commencement.
Britt graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in psychology.
n Tarah E. Gibbs of Berlin graduated from Georgia College & State University with a bachelor of arts degree with a major in English at the end of the spring 2009 semester.
Georgia College, located in Milledgeville, is Georgia's Public Liberal Arts University.
