Probation before judgment in sign language scam
(June 26, 2009) A woman who tricked Ocean City into hiring her to offer sign language services at various city events was given probation last week in what the judge called a "bizarre" case. (June 26, 2009) Ocean City lifeguards were kept busy on Tuesday tending to swimmers who received possible neck or back injuries from a strong surf. Child suffers dislocated jaw and broken arms from four-story fall
(June 26, 2009) An 8-year-old boy suffered major injuries after falling four stories from an Ocean City condominium and landing in the parking lot below. Police said the child was playing and climbing on the railing with friends on the fourth floor in the Jamaica Bay condominium complex on 33rd Street shortly before 5 p.m. on Monday when he fell over the railing. DNA leads to suspect in '91 rape
(June 26, 2009) A suspect has been identified in a 18-year-old rape case in Worcester County because of the progress in DNA testing in the years since the attack. Leslie Maize, 67, of Gowanda, N.Y., was identified as the suspect in a May 1991 rape in Pocomoke. Full Story
MISSION TEAM SPENDS WEEK IN WEST VIRGINIA
Twenty-one youth and 11 adult advisors recently spent a week in Mullens, W. Va., repairing homes in the area. The group consisted of five work teams, with each team working on a different home. The eight-week program is sponsored by the Community Church at Ocean Pines and also included youth from Stevenson United Methodist Church and from the Salisbury area. The youth will present a program of slides and share stories from their week in Appalachia during Sunday services at the Community Church at Ocean Pines on July 12. Full Story

Mako overfished in Atlantic, management plans discussed
(June 26, 2009) The National Marine Fisheries Service has determined that the shortfin mako shark is being overfished in the Atlantic Ocean. It is unknown what impact that could have on Ocean City shark fishing tournaments. The shortfin mako is the standard mako shark that is a popular catch in the waters off Ocean City. Full Story

BERLIN ALL-STARS WIN FRUITLAND TOURNAMENT
The Berlin All-Stars outscored each of its opponents, including defending champions West Salisbury, during the All- Star Double Elimination Pitching Machine Tournament, sponsored by the Fruitland Little League, for athletes aged 7- 8 years old. They will play for the Washington, D.C., Girls' All-Stars in a national tournament on June 27 and 28, at the Johnny Unitas Stadium at Towson University. College coaches from Division I, II and III lacrosse programs are invited to attend the games at Towson, which will give these coaches the opportunity to see some of the best young lacrosse players in action. LEARNING TO FISH
Stephanie Schmidt, with her father, Kevin, is the winner of a new fishing rod and reel, provided by the Ocean City-Berlin Optimist Club during the Teach a Kid to Fish event sponsored by the Ocean Pines Anglers Club.
