HEILMAN RECEIVES SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIP Amanda Heilman, a 21-year-old junior from Ocean City, received the first Charles and Judy Iager Scholarship this spring. Established in 2007 by the Iagers, the scholarship is awarded annually to a student who is enrolled in the animal sciences program in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland. Heilman is a double major in animal sciences pre-veterinary medicine and in agricultural science and technology. She also completed an additional College Park Scholars Environmental Studies program.

TOP DESIGNERS Students in Mrs. Lovell's fourth-grade class at Berlin Intermediate recently competed in a "Design a Dream Room" contest in which they researched items online that would be placed in their room in order to determine their cost. Students were given a budget and had to stay within that budget to furnish their "dream" room. Next, they designed detailed floor plans and wrote speeches to tell why their room should win. OCEAN PINES SKATE PARK OFFICIALLY OPEN OCEAN CITY TODAY/NANCY POWELL The new Ocean Pines skate park, nestled in the trees at White Horse Park, had its grand opening Saturday. The event, complete with refreshments, giveaways and demonstrations, attracted several supporters, including 18-year-old Ryan White of Ocean Pines, top, who was one of the first to skate the new bowl. More than 200 people have registered to use the park, designed by Artisan Skateparks of the Outer Banks, N.C. The park features ramps, ledges and rails and a 6- foot-deep snake run. A fence surrounds the park and it's under video surveillance 24 hours a day by the police department. It closes at dusk each day.
