Adopt a cat from county humane society
Editor,
We are in the midst of an epidemic concerning cat overpopulation. This is not just occurring in the Ocean City/Worcester County area, but everywhere. In shelters nationwide, more cats/kittens come in then go out.
In kill shelters, approximately 70 percent of cats are euthanized, and this number jumps to nearly 100 percent where feral cats are concerned. This is due to people allowing their unaltered cats to roam free, reproducing, as well as abandoning cats. This does not say much for our society. It is not helpful just to feed stray cats; they need to be trapped, sterilized, given a rabies vaccine and returned to their environment. They will be much healthier for it, and much more manageable.
Our humane society gets a lot of requests for cats and litters of kittens, especially this time of year. As a no-kill shelter, space is limited, and we often ask people to hold onto the animals until room is available.
Several of our workers foster kittens on a regular basis. We try to assist the public when requested with spaying and neutering, but funding is limited, as we have many animals at the shelter that require regular veterinary care.
June is Adopt a Cat Month. Whether you are looking for a cat or kitten, please come down and take a look, as we have many to choose from. If you can assist with donations, monetary or otherwise, please visit the shelter and speak with a volunteer about what you can do to make a difference.
The Shelter is located off Route 611 on Eagles Nest Road. We are open to the public from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday-Saturday.
