Alzheimer's Gala takes place Sunday
(May 15, 2009) Even opponents of gaming will admit May 17 is a good wager.
For its 12th annual Alzheimer's Gala, Star Charities is transforming the Clarion Fontainebleau's Crystal Ballroom into Las Vegas. The group's "Vegas Escape" promises an evening of elegant dining, dancing and the "bigger than life" entertainment traditionally expected from a night in the real Nevada resort.
"This year, the word is 'big,'" said volunteer chairwoman Susan Curtis. "From the four-course, sit-down dinner and the on-site table games, to our mega-baskets and unbelievable door prizes, we intend to do Vegas proud."
Jim Nooney will emcee the May event. Celebrity impersonators from Vintage Entertainment will perform songs made famous by Sinatra and Cline, and Morgan Curry, an Elvis impersonator, will bring The King to life. Local singer Katarina Burton will also perform, and the Ocean City Police Department Color Guard will lead the opening ceremony.
Tickets cost $40 and proceeds will benefit the Alzheimer Respite Care Program of the Lower Eastern Shore.
Anna Foultz, president of Star Charities, said the respite care funds for Worcester County "are completely depleted" and that her organization's annual gala is the single, major fundraiser that subsidizes local respite care. So far, more than 500 Eastern Shore families have benefited from the fund, she said.
"The money raised here stays here," Foultz said, adding, "If you can't come to the event, please donate to it."
Donations are sought from businesses and individuals in the form of $100 Table Game Sponsorships, $50 Dining Table Sponsors, or any prize or cash donation. All donations are tax deductible and all contributors will be acknowledged during the Gala. For more information, 410- 213-8770 or 410-641-7667.
"Don't wait for the slots to come to town," Curtis said. "You can wager on a real live table game right in the middle of our Vegas party. It is absolutely the hottest deal in town or even coming to town for May. A fantastic time at the Alzheimer's Gala is a sure bet."
