OCEAN CITY LOWERS TAX RATE BY 1.5 CENTS
Some last-minute budget cuts allow council enough wiggle room to set rate at 39.5 cents
(May 15, 2009) The Ocean City Council on Tuesday cut 1.5 cents off the proposed tax rate for next year after enough savings were found in the budget through some tough last-minute cuts. The tax rate for the 2010 fiscal year beginning July 1 was initially set at 41 cents, but the council was able to lower it to 39.5 cents. Full Story

Despite the name, hiring and salary freezes are not as solid as they seem

(May 15, 2009) Government jargon can be confusing for those not initiated into its use. For example, terms like "hiring freeze" and "salary freeze" might sound straightforward, but they do not mean quite what they say. Ocean City instituted a hiring freeze last October and a salary freeze in February. But since then, people have been hired and some salaries have increased. Full Story
