(May 1, 2009) The Stephen Decatur girls' lacrosse team added two more victories to its untarnished record, as the Lady Seahawks now eye their fourth consecutive Bayside Championship.
Decatur led the Parkside Rams last Friday 9-3 at halftime on its way to a 13- 7 win in Salisbury.
Olivia Turner topped all Decatur scoring with five goals. She also had an assist.
"It was a good game. They always play us tough," said Decatur Coach Bob Musitano. "We blew them out the first game (11-2), but it happens every year. The second time we have a bit of an issue with them. Their girls don't seem to peak until midway through the season."
On Monday at Trojan Stadium, Musitano said the Seahawks had a difficult time against Kent County after a more than two-hour bus ride and nearly 90-degree weather at game time. Decatur pulled out an 11-6 victory, although it wasn't easy.
The Lady Trojans gained a 3-1 advantage about 10 minutes into the game, but the Seahawks fought back to go ahead 8-4 at halftime.
"They played a good pressure defense. They had our number as far as their defense," Musitano said. "Once we figured out what they were doing, we made some adjustments and [Kent County] never got back into it. It didn't take us long to catch up."
With Turner out sick, Musitano said it took his players some time to adjust. Leigh Anne Flounlacker stepped up to fill the offensive void, tallying six goals. She also recorded an assist.
As the No. 1 team in the Bayside South, Decatur (12-0) will compete in the May 5 conference championship. The Seahawks will meet the top North squad, the Kent Island Buccaneers, at County Stadium in Salisbury. As of earlier this week, the Bucs' only loss this season was to Decatur. The Berlin squad edged out Kent Island 6-4 on March 30.
The two teams have gone head-tohead in the championship the past three years.
"They're getting better and better. It's going to be an interesting one," Musitano said. "They have a couple of very good players that we have to control. We need to play pressure defense. We've gotten the offense to settle down, we just need to run our plays and work the ball around."
After Baysides, the first round of the 3A/2A East Regional tournament is scheduled for May 7.
