(March 6, 2009) Worcester County schools will be forced to take "a giant leap backward" thanks to the deep budget cuts mandated by the county. There was no love lost between the board of education and the Worcester County Commissioners on Tuesday when the board met for its last review of the budget before it is adopted in two weeks. Car hits bank A 49-year-old woman was taken to the hospital Feb. 26, after she drove her vehicle into the side of the PNC Bank in downtown Berlin. According to the Berlin Police Department, Shirley Ayers of Frankford, Del., failed to stop at a stop sign and drove into the side of the bank on William Street, causing significant damage to the building. Alert siren to sound Saturday at 10 a.m.
(March 6, 2009) Worcester County residents will again hear the emergency alert signals from their local fire sirens on Saturday, March 7. The county has taken this step to provide additional means to warn the surrounding communities of imminent danger and the need to tune to radio, television or the Internet for information in the event of emergencies. Home energy audits could save energy, money from leaking though the cracks
(March 6, 2009) Winter's cold air can enter homes through very small openings, adding considerable expense to the cost of heating. Summer's hot air enters the same way, adding expense to the cost of cooling. Ryan asks for time to hire attorney in Mitchell death case
(March 6, 2009) The man who allegedly started the fight that ended with the death of Michael "Mikey" Mitchell, 19, in Berlin last May told a judge Tuesday he needs time to save money so he can hire a defense attorney. Michael Patrick Ryan, 31, was the host of a party at his Decatur Farm residence on May 29 following the graduation at Stephen Decatur High School. Full Story
Woman in auto collision files suit against Town of OC
(March 6, 2009) A Newark woman is suing the Town of Ocean City because an on-duty member of the resort police department struck her car in 2007. According to the suit, Cheryl Gage suffered "painful and permanent injuries" when a police vehicle driven by Pfc. Joseph Bushnell struck her vehicle at 64th Street and Coastal Highway. Full Story
Illegal alien sentenced to 33 months for racketeering conspiracy
(March 6, 2009) U.S. District Judge Marvin J. Garbis sentenced Mohammad Akhtar, 52, to 33 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for a racketeering conspiracy. Akhtar was involved in a scheme to bribe officials with both the U.S. Full Story
Recycling drop-off facility work to stay in county
(March 6, 2009) When Worcester County hires a company or contractor to do work, it should try to hire ones from within the county, County Commissioner Bobby Cowger said Tuesday.
