Berlin mourns loss of mayor

Berlin Mayor Tom Cardinale had been soliciting support for weeks to be re-elected to office, but although his spirit was strong, his heart was not. He died at home on Saturday, just one week before his official campaign kick-off event.

Drinking a beer on the Boardwalk still won’t be legal, but at least it will not mean a day or night in jail for the offender once the City Council passes an ordinance decriminalizing open container violations.

The summer season officially began in Ocean City on Thursday, when the 18th annual Springfest kicked off at the inlet. Performing at the ceremony was the Ocean City Elementary School’s OC Stars musical group, which received applause from Worcester County Commissioners Linda Busick, left, and Judy Boggs, Hotel-Motel-Restaurant Association Executive Director Susan Jones and Assistant Tourism Director Debbie Travers. Springfest runs Thursday through Sunday at the inlet parking lot, with arts and crafts and food for sale and live entertainment.
